Gentilly Landfill Case

Over 150 persons own approximately 750 undeveloped lots in a 200 acre site in New Orleans East. Record title to their land is readily found in the New Orleans Conveyance Office, Assessor’s Office, Department of Finance, City Planning Commission and Office of Property Management. The individual parcels are depicted on surveys, zoning and city maps found throughout City Hall. Even now, the owners pay property taxes to New Orleans.

Gentilly Landfill Boundaries

Despite knowing who the true owners are, the politically connected city contractors and the City applied for a permit to operate a 200 acre landfill on these lands, without asking the real owners’ permission. Then, after Katrina, over seven billion pounds of debris was heaped on these taxpayer lands. Not one dime of the sixty million plus in revenues collected at the gate since 2005 has been paid to the real owners. The City has since claimed it could take the lands by eminent domain, without notice or payment!

Waltzer & Wiygul sued on behalf of the owners. Waltzer & Wiygul will not rest until their clients’ receive just compensation and their property rights are vindicated.
